About this

Nalanda Mahavihara, located in Bihar, India, was a major Buddhist monastic university that operated from the 5th to the 12th century CE. The site includes the excavated remains of multiple monasteries, temples, and stupas, along with extensive brick structures that once housed thousands of monks and scholars. Archaeological evidence shows lecture halls, residential cells, and a large library complex that supported studies in Buddhist philosophy, logic, medicine, and grammar. The ruins are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and provide direct physical evidence of one of the earliest organized centers of higher learning in South Asia.
