While we were here we went to a talk about the history of the telescope and it's surprising that it even got built after learning about it! Bernard Lovell almost went to prison due to overspending of public money on the project, but evaded incarceration due to being able to track Sputnik's booster rocket in 1957. The British government deemed the project vital, and allowed Lovell to continue!
