About this

Leh Palace, a nine-storey mud-brick structure built in the early 17th century, sits above the old town and offers a sequence of rooms whose carved wooden ceilings and wall paintings remain visible. From its upper terraces the view extends across the Indus Valley to the Stok Range. Nubra Valley lies several hours north by road over the Khardung La pass; the route crosses high desert and then descends to a broad valley where double-humped camels graze near sand dunes. The region’s monasteries, including Diskit and Hunder, preserve wall paintings and libraries of Tibetan texts.
