Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site
Dachau, established in 1933 near Munich, Germany, served as the first Nazi concentration camp and a model for others, initially detaining political opponents before expanding to imprison Jews, Roma, homosexuals, and various dissidents. Over its 12-year operation, it held more than 200,000 prisoners from across Europe, subjecting them to forced labor, brutal medical experiments, starvation, and executions, resulting in over 41,000 deaths before its liberation by U.S. forces in April 1945. Today, the site functions as a memorial and museum dedicated to remembering the victims and educating visitors about the horrors of the Holocaust.
