About this

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary protects a reservoir created in 1895, where boat routes pass through submerged tree trunks that still mark the old river course. Early-morning departures increase the chance of seeing herds of gaur grazing on the grassy banks and herds of elephants crossing shallow inlets. The surrounding hills rise steeply from the water, creating micro-climates that support both moist deciduous and evergreen species within a few hundred metres of each other.
