About this

The Alcobaça Monastery complex houses the tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, whose carved stone effigies face each other so their feet touch at the Resurrection. Visitors can walk the 115-meter-long church and examine the 13th-century high altar retable carved from local limestone. The adjoining cloister and chapter room preserve Cistercian vaulting and water channels that once supplied the abbey’s kitchens and pharmacy. These architectural and sculptural features remain largely intact after nine centuries.
