The Qinghai-Tibet Railway spans 1,956 kilometers from Xining in Qinghai province to Lhasa in Tibet, reaching an elevation of 5,072 meters at Tanggula Pass, the world's highest rail point. Opened in 2006, it features engineering adaptations like permafrost-resistant tracks, oxygen-enriched train cars, and insulated sections to handle extreme altitudes, thin air, and freezing temperatures, providing the primary overland route to Tibet's capital.
