Valparaíso's funiculars, known locally as ascensores, are a network of historic inclined railways built mostly between the late 19th and early 20th centuries to navigate the city's steep hills. These mechanical lifts transport passengers from the port area up to residential neighborhoods, with about 15 still operational out of the original 30, offering practical access and views of the urban landscape. Recognized for their cultural significance, they form part of the city's UNESCO World Heritage site, blending engineering heritage with everyday utility.
