The Mahale Mountains in western Tanzania host a significant population of eastern chimpanzees, living in the dense forests along the shores of Lake Tanganyika. These primates, part of Mahale Mountains National Park, form large communities and exhibit complex social behaviors, including tool use and hunting. Researchers have studied them extensively since the 1960s, noting their close genetic relation to humans and adaptations to the mountainous terrain.
