The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad runs 45 miles through southwest Colorado's Animas River valley and San Juan National Forest on a historic three-foot-wide track built in the 1880s. Vintage steam locomotives pull restored passenger cars over canyons, cliffs, and pine-covered mountains, offering views of the Needle Mountains and stops at Silverton, a preserved mining town at 9,300 feet elevation. Round-trip rides from Durango take about 8-9 hours, with options for shorter segments or hikes along the route.
