About this

Fatehpur Sikri, situated about 40 kilometres west of Agra, was built in the late 16th century by the Mughal emperor Akbar as his short-lived capital. The sandstone complex includes the Jama Masjid, the Buland Darwaza, and the tomb of the Sufi saint Salim Chishti, along with palaces and administrative buildings arranged around open courtyards. Construction began around 1571 and the site was largely abandoned by 1585 when the court moved to Lahore. Today the well-preserved structures illustrate Mughal architectural planning, combining Persian, Indian, and Central Asian elements.
