The Elephanta Caves are a collection of rock-cut Hindu temples and sculptures located on Elephanta Island in Mumbai Harbour. Carved from basalt rock between the 5th and 8th centuries CE, the site features a main cave with a central shrine dedicated to Shiva, surrounded by relief panels depicting episodes from Hindu mythology. The caves include large stone sculptures such as the Trimurti, a three-headed representation of Shiva, along with other figures and architectural elements typical of early medieval Indian temple design.
