The Living Root Bridges in Meghalaya are aerial walkways formed by training the aerial roots of Ficus elastica trees across rivers and ravines. Local Khasi communities guide the roots over bamboo frameworks or along natural supports, allowing them to thicken and intertwine until they create stable, self-repairing structures that can span 30 meters or more. Construction typically takes 10–15 years, after which the bridges continue to grow and strengthen for decades or centuries.
